Fit faillite en octobre 1998, ce qui fragilisa toute la crédibilité des emprunts chinois. Le Guangdong est, en effet, une province côtière de Chine méridionale particulièrement développée et ouverte aux entreprises et aux capitaux étrangers; sa capitale est Guangzhou (Canton).
